Lebanon’s uncertain future: Civil war - again - and the spark of regional conflict? Posted on May 15th
About last week’s fighting in Beirut between Hezbollah militants (backed by Syria and Iran) and forces supportive of the U.S.-favored, pro-Western government of Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora: Agence France Presse describes the violence as “the worst infighting since the 1975-1990 civil war” in famously sectarian Lebanon; it “left at least 65 people dead and around 200 wounded in six bloody days….The fighting was unleashed after the government said it was launching a probe into a communication network set up by Hezbollah and reassigned the head of [Beirut’s] airport security over allegations he was close to the powerful group.” Yesterday, representatives of the Arab League rolled into Lebanon to hold talks with rival factions in the latest armed clashes in an effort to negotiate some kind of peace settlement between them.
